The Facilities

  • Buildings
    • Both our Ooralea Hospital and North Mackay clinic are purpose-built facilities
    • Two purpose-built practices, each with two consulting rooms, hospitalization facilities and surgical theatres
    • Large animal hospitalization and knock-down box at our Ooralea hospital
    • Smart Flow hospital management system
  • Equipment
    • Surgical
      • Our vets are encouraged to expand their repertoire in theatre and we routinely perform exploratory laparotomy, caesarian section, ophthalmic, fracture repair and stifle (MPL, extracapsular stabilization, TTO and TPLO) procedures. Dr Alistair Grant attained his MANZCVS in small animal surgery in 2017 and aims to help with learning across the whole team. Some of the toys are:
        • Surgical suction and electrocautery
        • Surgical loupes
        • Orthopaedic equipment including fully-autoclavable Stryker CD3 drill and Aesculap Acculan 3Ti TPLO saw
        • Dedicated ophthalmic kit
        • In-theatre monitor with DICOM-PACS access
        • All disposable drapes and gowns used
        • All suture used is suture packs (swaged needles)
    • Medical
      • Maintaining a high level of medical knowledge and skills has been a continual focus at Stabler & Howlett. We see this as particularly important given the ever-changing information that is available. Dr Letitia Grant and Dr Megan Schofield have both completed one-year CVE courses in internal medicine which has helped to ensure we provide best-practice treatment for our patients. In addition to regular diagnostic imaging and sampling, we also perform BAL, CSF taps and arthrocentesis on a regular basis. Some of the equipment that helps us to provide a high level of medical care includes:
        • Tonovet
        • Ophthalmoscopes and otoscopes
        • Anaesthesia monitors including NIBP and ET
        • Piped oxygen in the hospital for respiratory support
        • Facilities and support for chemotherapy
        • ECG
        • Mechanical ventilator
    • Diagnostic imaging
      • Like to see what’s going on? We enjoy diagnostic imaging and are continually upgrading our skills and equipment to make sure we are up to date with best practice. Our current equipment includes:
        • Canon DR full-body radiography
        • Mindray M9 ultrasound machine
        • Sonosite Turbo for mare reproductive examination
        • Olympus endoscopy tower with rigid and flexible video-endoscopy
    • Dental
      • Our small animal dentistry is all performed at our North Mackay clinic. This helps to keep it separate from our major sterile procedures (orthopaedics and complex soft-tissue surgery) and also helps to share the procedural workload between the two practices. Our equipment is all supplied through iM3 and includes:
        • CR7 Vet radiography
        • 42-12 Ultrasonic scaler scaler
        • ‘GS Deluxe “LED” Dental Unit
    • Laboratory
      • A fully-equipped in-house laboratory is important for us to receive prompt results whilst treating our patients. We use IDEXX and QML for external laboratory services. Our current in-house laboratory is equipped with:
        • IDEXX Procyte Dx and Catalyst One blood analysers
        • I-Stat blood analyser
        • Olympus microscopes
    • Large Animal
      • The Stabler & Howlett large animal clientele is built around beef cattle and western (stockwork, campdraft and cutting) horses. The spread of clients is approximately 2 hours to the north, west and south of Mackay. In addition to all ambulatory needs, our large animal service focuses on routine reproductive work and equine dentistry. Our hospital facilities (knock-down box and yards) allows for more complex cases to be hospitalized for medical or surgical management such as cryptorchid surgery, dental extractions and RIVP procedures. The large-animal service is equipped with:
        • EasiScan
        • iSperm
        • Powerfloat
        • Portable DR, cordless radiography
        • Trailer with portable horse crush
